Inga the Winger's online

New Zealand rugby icon Inga Tuigamala is now online with a Go Kiwi Internet e-commerce website. His wesite, complete with Product Database, Shopping Cart, PayPal account, New Domain Names and an Articles Module was designed, built and published in a high pressure situation, completed in less than . . . wait for it . . . only 24 hours!

That's no exaggeration either. The website was up and running within three hours - two new domain names were registered, configured and enabled. Additional modules were installed "that night" and final tweaks the next day (this morning!). Just like Iga's own story, that is a real story in professionalism from the Go Kiwi Internet team.

Inga's book launch (INGA - MY STORY) is on Friday at Byron on Spencer. There are still some tickets available so grab them if you can. Murray Deaker is the MC with David Tua speaking as well as Inga himself. Good food, good guy and a good cause.

Inga's done time as an All Black, mucked around with League, is doing a gym, and has an undertaking business - that's a real story if there ever was one!

Well done Inga. Good to see you venturing into the online world now too. We hope it all goes well for you!

Christchurch Agency Appointed

Go Kiwi Internet is delighted to announce the appointment of Rob Laidlaw to a Go Kiwi Internet Agency.

Rob is based in Christchurch and has a strong background working within different businesses,
and married with two littlies and another on the way, Rob loves working with people in business.

"I've been looking for an opportunity for a while now where I could help others in a mentoring way but at the same time build a business of my own," he says. "A Go Kiwi Internet Agency is a great way for me to help others in business using my previous business experiences.

Rob has a range of business skills with both management and sales experience at opposite ends of the world.

"I started in the Travel Industry, selling wholesale, and have moved through a range of business roles and spent time both Amsterdam and London, working in the financial and IT sectors. My most recent work has been assisting SMEs and Corporates in testing software plus providing various business development and investment advice."

With a strong interest in mentoring businesses and also in both technical and design, a Go Kiwi Internet Agency, esssentially website design and development, instantly appealed to him.

"I see the ongoing opportunities for growth in this industry, and love the people-based management style that Go Kiwi offers. I enjoy working with people and have found the time I have spent with Go Kiwi Internet really inspiring and motivating!" he says.

Rob's multicultural experiences and previous leadership roles in mentoring and assisting others were attractive from Go Kiwi Internet's perspective as a large part of the Go Kiwi Internet business model is to work with young people.

Building the Go Kiwi Internet team within Christchurch and mentoring others to establish other Agencies is an important part of the Go Kiwi Internet business model. Rob is keen to help newcomers - younger or less experienced in business knowledge - and is willing and able to mentor them into a successful business of their own.

He will be sharing his business experience on his personal website.

All of us welcome you to the team Rob and wish you all the best in your southern-based website development business.

FUM and Backlinks

Managing Director, Dennis A. Smith recently spoke at the annual conference of Rent a Dent (A New Zealand Rental Car Company) and shared the extreme importance of FUM and backlinks.

Last year Go Kiwi Internet helped all their branches into their own website (Rent-a-Dent - New Zealand Car Rental website upgrade ) and SEO efforts were put into each branch website.

The second phase for this company's web presence is to build backlinks (links back to the various branch websites by satisfied customers blogging about them, links from affiliated motels and so on) and FUM (Fresh, Unique Meaningful content).

Search Engines like Google love FUM because their objective is to provide the best user experience for their customers. Finding and returning FUM content creates a better user experience. Because people are looking for FUM - so therefore the Search Engines love it.

Make sure that you too put plenty of FUM into your web presence.

New Websites and Google

Yesterday we made a website live that we had been working on... www.merdekacoffee.co.nz. Today the customer has sent us an email wondering why her website is not coming up in a Google Search, no matter what combination of search phrases she uses.

This is not the first time we have had customers come back to us wondering why they can't find their website on Google. . . and I can pretty much guarantee it won't be the last.

As Dennis explained in his book "Internet Unmasked" in the chapter on Search Engines: "Google tends to prefer established websites over new websites. A new website will generally rank well for a week or so, and then drop much further down, for around 6 months. It will then climb to its natural position, based on the SEO."

Marine Brokers online database

City of Sails Marine Brokers in Auckland are an excellent example of a "new business" style company that has shunned the traditional crippling overheads of retail space in favour of building a strong web presence.

Owners, Blair Harkness and Janis Marler are thrilled with the new website. "We're now sporting a fresh new look and feel, and have gone from using manually entered pages for our boat listings to being database driven", says Blair.

This is a showcase example of the Go Kiwi Internet Product Database Module. To see how it works look at their yachts for sale page, and especially the detailed information available for each boat. It's a great example of taking products online, but don't spend too long on their site or, like me, you might start having thoughts about converting unnecessary real estate into something with sails!

One of the exciting aspects about getting products on line is tapping into the vast power of Google. Try searching for a "Gladden 44" in Google and like most of their boats it comes up number one (#1 "Pages from NZ" option, #2 for "the web", at time of writing). This concept in SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) terms is called working the "long tail of Search". In other words, there are a large number of low volume, but much more specific, phrases that people use to find things they're looking for every day online.

Being online doesn't mean being a faceless company that provides no service though. On the City of Sails website you'll see that Blair Harkness, Janis Marler and Skipper the dog are all there ready to give the customer a full service experience. Although one has to be careful to retain professionalism, little personal touches like Skipper can really help online viewers see that you're real people, ready to do business in an old fashioned Kiwi way even though you've embraced all this new Interweb stuff.

K5 Upgrades complete

Production Manager, Eileen Taffard says that the bulk of clients who upgraded their websites in 2008 are now fizzing with the new system. "Everyone who uses the system love it for a whole bunch of reasons", she says. "One guy actually said the designer of K5 is a genius, it was so good!"

Technical Manager, Tony Rigden is a little more reserved but still acknowledges that the K5 system has been an exciting project to work on. "The K5 system is a proper Windows application and is quite powerful. We've been able to get all the ease of use in a proper Windows program that runs on your desktop but it also updates live to the web. This gives our customers the best of both worlds!"

Thrive not just survive

Go Kiwi Internet is in growth mode. We are currently appointing Agents throughout New Zealand and preparing the company for substantial expansion in two ways - increased geographical coverage of the country and increased interaction with sub-contractors and agents.

This growth has been planned for several years but the arrival of the recession has been quite timely for us, because our unique business model is perfectly suited to helping the many small businesses that need a professional web presence without out paying thousands. Many people who have lost their job will establish themselves in business. A Go Kiwi Internet Agency is also perfectly suited to a small business.

Adjusting to tighter times

If you are in business and things are looking grim, don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Find ways to leverage your existing business opportunities rather than abandon what you do have. In recessionary times businesses often need to rethink their business strategy in order to remain competitive and maintain growth.

While change brings stress, it also brings opportunity.

Australian motivator Gihan Perera recently sent me this chart and suggestions. They are good ideas to mull over as you structure your business to thrive, not just survive:

UP-sell: Ironically, some struggling clients will actually pay more. I would add though, AS LONG AS YOU PROVIDE GREATER VALUE

DOWN-sell: If they don't want your core package, what cheaper option do you have?

CROSS-sell: When they buy the core package what else can you sell them at the same time?

RE-sell: How can you repackage your [product] to make it more relevant [and obtain repeat business]?

CORE sell: What other assets [products/services] do you have that you're not fully using?

He summarises this by encouraging us to think evolution, not revolution.

Good advice thank you Gihan.

The SEO cheat-sheet

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the art of "getting your website higher on Google" and other Search Engines.

It can be a complex business and is a constantly changing landscape as Search Engines change their algorythmns and formulas, but the essence of SEO is quite simple - do the right things and your website will be found and rank well.

Here are the basics for the busy business owner:

1. Natural and Ethical

The underlying principle of good SEO practice is to work hard to learn and understand how the Search Engines work; then deliberately caters to their needs, and NEVER attempts to fool, trick or "use" anything to manipulate them.

2. Search Phrases

Every page should have a primary topic and contain one (or maybe two) clearly identifiable Search Phrase(s).

3. Meta Tags

Every web page should have correct HTML formatting with META tags understood and used properly.

4. Fresh Content

Websites with fresh, meaningful, original content are indexed more frequently

Fresh, as in new material on a weekly, even daily basis.

Meaningful, as in rich content, with words that naturally link together heuristically.

Original as in unique, uncopied text

5. Inbound Links

Quality inbound links are critical and ultimately determine the final ranking of a website. Quality, as in:

From "authority" websites

As old as possible

Obtained naturally

All Go Kiwi Internet websites are SEO friendly out-of-the-box, so to speak, with SEO friendly URLs, and the ability to maintain META TITLE, KEYWORDS, DESCRIPTION, and H1 tags on a per-page basis

Opposition Targets GKI Clients

Go Kiwi Internet has recently been the target of somewhat dubious marketing efforts from an opposition company seeking to secure new business.

A recent email supposedly sent from a Willy Musgrave, from NZ Barter Hosting to a Go Kiwi Internet client raises questions in regard to their ethics in marketing to competitors client bases. Aside from the fact that the company hides the true identity of the Domain Name Registrant (the owner) in the WHOIS register, neither does it exist in the New Zealand Companies Office, it also claims to have developed half a dozen offshore websites - a couple in America, and a couple in Mexico.

Go Kiwi Internet is clearly a prime target for opposition companies to poach business from:

We've been around longer than most

We have more clients than most

But we're also one of the hardest to poach from:

The principal of Go Kiwi Internet has built a strong relationship with almost all Go Kiwi Internet clients over some 10 years in business

The Go Kiwi Internet offering is unique

Customers do not choose to work with Go Kiwi Internet because of price alone

In the interest of fairness, and to help establish the facts for comparative purposes, we present first the marketing material sent to our client (probably actually clients), then, a copy of text on the NZ Barter Hosting website describing Go Kiwi Internet as "crooks", then our commentary and advice.

SAMPLE WEBSITE CONTENT

"In fact, we think GoKiwi are crooks. For $500 they "include" a Content Management System which is free for them to license and use. They charge huge fees for "setting it up" and huge ongoing fees for each and every additional service. A Gokiwi "package" of just 1/2 the things we offer would cost approximately $4,000!"

OUR COMMENTS:

Any web development or hosting company is perfectly welcome to approach any other provider's customer and solicit for their clients. This is simply commercial reality, however it should be done legally. Willy appears to have approached a prospect cold, via email, with a commercial offering. No prior relationship existed. This is called SPAM and it is illegal in New Zealand. Anyone in the web industry should really know this by now. All he has to do is phone the prospect and ask for his email address to send his offer. Simple and legal. Not hard to do.

Comments on the NZ Barter Hosting website and the spam email are factually incorrect and naive. Most clients do actually check sales and marketing materials and they will work out the facts so it is always best to be honest up front. Claims of $4,000.00 for a website and $500.00 for setting up hosting are . . . well . . . to put it politely, not quite accurate! We understand the desire to secure new business, but encourage others in the industry to at least have some degree of accuracy in their comparisons. For the record, most Go Kiwi Internet websites cost in the order of $500.00 and very occasionally with additional modules, may cost in the order of $1,000.00 for website functionality many times more expensive from many others in the industry. Claiming that Go Kiwi are crooks and overcharge, then claiming incorrectly that there is a large setup cost for a Content Management System is unnecessary and just silly!

NZ Barter Hosting advertises that they develop websites free. There's no free lunch in this world and you always get what you pay for, but we wish NZ Barter Hosting all the best. There's plenty of business out there and for people who want free design and discount hosting from an anonymous company, you NOW know where to go!

Be careful out there people. Not everything is as it seems! Our advice to other web development and hosting companies is to use the facts when comparing offerings, and to please comply with the anti-spam laws when marketing.

Our advice to people looking for potential web solution providers - look very carefully and deal with people you know and can trust!

GKI appoints Dunedin Sales Agent

Go Kiwi Internet is pleased to announce the purchase of the client-base of Dunedin based web developer, Look Sharp Websites and has appointed them Go Kiwi Internet Sales Agents.

According to David Stewart, Managing Director of Look Sharp Websites, the deal struck with Go Kiwi Internet is a perfect win-win situation. "In essence, Go Kiwi Internet has bought our client-base, allowing us to focus more on what we are good at - sales and customer support. Our clients will benefit from having nationwide support services and access to the latest in Content Management Systems and advanced modules provided by Go Kiwi."

Go Kiwi Internet are looking forward to working with Dunedin clients. Production Manager, Eileen Taffard says that their previous acquisition and integration of almost 100 Better Business Centre customers from Christchurch was an excellent lesson in how to help people get up to speed with new technology. "As an Auckland-based company it is particularly important for us to support local people whenever dealing with anyone 'South of the Bombays'. We look forward to working closely with David and his team."

The business arrangements appoint Look Sharp as Go Kiwi Internet Sales Agents, based in Dunedin, but without geographical restriction. "The Go Kiwi Internet Sales Agency acknowledges that while we are based in Dunedin the reality is that with the Internet, business can now be done anywhere in the world," says Mr Stewart.

Go Kiwi Internet Business Development Manager, John Jones, believes that mergers and buyouts will be a mark the web development industry in the next few years. "These sorts of business arrangements are just another sign of the times as businesses focus on their core competencies in order to grow and remain healthy in a competitive market. In the early days of the Internet, a web developer could do everything themselves, and one-man-bands were common. I believe that now, developers need to work more with a range of specialists and collaboration, acquisitions and mergers are a great way to build a solid successful business."

Both companies are Foundation Members of the Web Developers Association (www.wdanz.co.nz). Go Kiwi Internet provides a range of wholesale services and business opportunities. More

Rent-a-Dent - New Zealand Car Rental website upgrade

A big congratulations to Rent-a-Dent,
an established New Zealand-owned Car
Rental company that has just upgraded their old website.

Rent-a-Dent's previous
offering was an ugly looking brute, with sub-sites for each owner-operated
franchise that were impossible to use or navigate, and never updated by the
branches, even from day one. Worse still, the URLs of the website broke many SEO
rules and guidelines (e.g.
http://www.rentadent.co.nz/Portal.asp?nextscreenid=201.102.101.101&categoryid=3&sessionx=34855B0C-471E-4BD9-8D1B-677515E62239),
and gave them effectively zero Search Engine power, other than for their own
name, "Rent-a-Dent".

After the client lost confidence in their previous web developer (who was
undergoing a sale of the business and had staffing troubles at the time), the
owner undertook a long-term approach to building a serious web presence, the
strategy one of building individual websites for each branch.

Go Kiwi Internet undertook face-to-face staff training, still photography and
videography in both the North Island, and the South Island, ready for the launch
of all websites on 30 September 2008.

New Zealand Car
Rentals is a competitive search phrase, but with each branch maintaining
their own localised website, and using good generic domain names (such as www.taupocarrentals.co.nz),
the linking power is multiplied. A good example of effective corporate SEO.

Even though Go Kiwi Internet has systems built for volume, building 26 websites,
training each franchisee nationwide and completing this in an insanely short two
months was a real achievement for the Go Kiwi Internet team. We are sure that
the work put in to this new web presence will reap rewards for the company.

Kwik-Az Updating (V 5.0) in Beta

Kwik-Az Updating Version 5.0 has now been launched in Beta. Called K5 for short, K5 is available to Go Kiwi Internet customers, although some restrictions may apply for a while to existing users with advanced features.

Conversions will be handled on a first-come-first-served basis. Get in first before the waiting list grows!

K5 is a major version release, effectively a total new back-end that brings amazing speed and increased power to all K5 users. K5 is Application software that is so fast that it has to be tried to believe it. Test have shown K5 to be up to 50 times faster than some CMS systems and at least twenty times faster than previous Kwik-Az versions. This is because K5 is a program that resides on your own computer, so there is no longer any need to CLICK and WAIT, CLICK and WAIT while the Internet downloads the updating pages.

Our development team is proud of their work and are excited to make months of progarmming work a reality for GKI customers. Director and Technical Manager, Tony Rigden says "I believe that this is the way of the future - using a rich, powerful application on the customers' computer, and only accessing the web to update the page. It totally removes the WORLD WIDE WAIT factor!"

Production Manager, Eileen Taffard is looking forward to helping customers downlaod and install K5. "K5 is so easy! They [GKI customers] are going to love it!"

Managing Director, Dennis Smith says that K5 is a new direction forward for the company. "Our focus is on giving tools that are fast, easy-to-use, and just get the job done. Most Go Kiwi Internet customers can't be bothered with waiting and fancy features that never work. They want to get in there, do the changes and get on with their business. K5 is a great improvement to previous versions of Kwik-Az Updating."

K5 has it's own website, with screenhots, online help and FAQs.

Invite to Internet UNMASKED!!

Happy New Year, - that's if we haven't had any contact with you so far in 2008!

If you are located in the greater Auckland district (or if you are coming to Auckland in April), would you join me for an amazing educational experience on Wednesday the 16th April? The Web Developers Association of NZ is running an educational and networking event called Internet UNMASKED!! that will just blow your socks off - I promise.

I will of course be presenting again - this time two full-on sessions - and we are launching our new book on the day (Internet UNMASKED!! - The Essential Handbook for New Zealand Business and Not-For-Profits - 2008). We have limited the numbers attending to just 800 (yes this is one MAJOR event!) and six other professional speakers and authors will be joining me to share our knowledge and experiences. We already know of people coming from as far as Gisborne and Timaru just for the day - and it will be well worth it.

Go Kiwi Internet has purchased a number of copies of the book and we are offering the Internet UNMASKED!! book to all Go Kiwi Internet customers attending the event at a VERY SPECIAL below cost PRICE of only $1.00 incl GST. This book is being sold on the day for $39.95!.

This 2008 handbook is not just any book. It is a massive 250 page, high quality, easy to read, A4 format book packed with 60,000+ words of very practical suggestions and professional advice on everything to do with the Internet for business and Not for Profits. It also has contributions from dozens of New Zealand web developers, all sharing their advice with you.

Here's the deal . . . Just log on to www.internetunmasked.com and register your attendance for the day using the Promotional Code 1670287 and you can order the book for $1.00 and get a FREE LUNCH. You can use the Promotional Code as many times as you like for your friends and colleagues, but the book offer is only valid for one copy per Go Kiwi Internet customer.

I know some of you told me that you regretted missing the other events, so now is the time to get in early. Earlybird registrations close on 19 March 2008 which is a saving of $50.00 + GST. ($99.00 + GST is the Earlybird price - $149.00 + GST after 19 March)

As many of you will know, I've been presenting nationwide for the Web Developers Association for almost 2 years now, and everyone who has attended the past events has got good value. Internet UNMASKED!! - especially with the book launch and one-time offer - will be a day you won't forget in a hurry.

On top of the seven experts presentations, there will also be seven speed networking events throughout the day, so there is a good chance that you may even meet someone who you can do business with. Speed networking is a cross between speed dating and a Business After Five network meeting. It really works well, as it is a simple quick formal process, only a few minutes at a time and everyone loves it.

The Internet is now reaching right into our various businesses in more ways that one - online banking, email marketing, security risks, global markets and opportunities. We are all at different stages of our learning with these new technologies. Come along for the day and hear from our various experts, and of course "yours truly", on how you can use the new technologies in your business.

Now, if you really absolutely can't get along on the day (like say, you will be in Europe at the time, or you are getting married the day before) and you just can't get your husband or wife or secretary or cleaner to attend for you, the book will be available from 16 April, at the normal price of $39.95 at Whitcoulls or available online at www.emerald.co.nz.

For our Christchurch and Wellington customers, WDANZ may be bringing Internet UNMASKED!! to you later in the year, but these details are yet to be confirmed. To everyone else, I look forward to seeing you on the day.

E-Mail configuration

We strongly advise all clients to use their own domain name for email purposes, at the earliest possible opportunity.

If you tell people to use an address something@xtra.co.nz or something@clear.net.nz then you are simply wasting opportunity. Using your ISP's email address when you have your own domain name is just buying yourself a future problem. When you wish to change to another ISP (and we all will want to do this at some point), you will have to reprint all your marketing and advise your whole contact list of your new address!

Transferring your email to your own domain name is easy. The old email address will still continue to work as long as you are with your old ISP and you can reprint your business cards with your new address in due course.

Your new email settings will be:

Incoming mailserver: pop.safemail.co.nz
Outgoing mailserver: smtp.[your ISP here] (e.g. xtra.co.nz, ihug.co.nz etc)
Username: as supplied
Password: as supplied
